Tempeh…a very nutritious and friggin’ delicious food

I typically avoid soy products.  However, after researching fermented soy products (organic, non-GMO obviously) I decided I wanted to experiment with tempeh because of the long list of nutritional benefits.  I like to find nutritious foods and add them to my diet to ensure variety as I tend to eat the same thing breakfast-lunch-dinner for months until I cannot look at the food anymore!  Bad habit that is on its way out…

Anyway, so this evening I made a basic tempeh dish.  I will admit after getting a good look at the block of fermented soy just out of the packaging, I didn’t want to proceed.  I thought, “maybe I should just try a different fermented soy product”.  Take a look at this appetizing piece…


Do you blame me for second guessing my dinner choice?  Looks like dinosaur skin to me.

Well I persisted, and I’m so glad I did!  It was absolutely delicious – so good I cooked the remainder of the package after tasting my finished product!  The texture and taste of the tempeh reminded me of chicken lettuce wraps.  Here’s what my dinner looked like once done.


The recipe is simple and takes about 8 minutes.  Check it below:

1 package of Lightlife Organic Tempeh


1 tbsp Braggs Liquid Amino (you may use soy sauce)

1 tbsp cooking oil (I used coconut oil)

Cut tempeh into small cubes.  As you can see from the finished product, they were quite small.  Tempeh cuts very easily (not as easily as tofu).  In fact you do not need a knife to do so – fork will work.

Place oil in sauté pan covering entire pan and place of high heat.  Do not skimp on the oil as you want the tempeh to brown and almost coat itself with the oil.  Wait a minute for pan to become hot, then add cut tempeh.  Stir tempeh as it cooks so that the small cubes brown evenly.  When all tempeh is a golden brown color, add the Liquid Aminos (or soy sauce).  Stir for another minute and done!

This stuff was so meat-like, I’m thinking of using a bit of trickery when visiting my parents next.  Make them dinner…they won’t even know what hit ’em!  BAAM – nutritional goodness!
